Ice Dams in Minnesota: Why Summer Is the Best Time to Prevent Winter Problems
It may seem early to think about ice dams, but summer is actually the best time to prepare for them. Before Minnesota's snow and freezing temperatures arrive, it's a good idea to have your roof inspected, improve attic insulation or ventilation if needed, and address any areas that could contribute to ice dam formation.
Ice dams are a common problem in Minnesota, but not every home is equally susceptible. Factors such as roof design, insulation, ventilation, and weather conditions all play a role. Some winters produce very few ice dams, while others create widespread issues.
One of our favorite local resources is The Ice Dam Company, based right here in Hopkins, Minnesota. Their team has an excellent library of information explaining what ice dams are, how to help prevent them, how to recognize the warning signs, and what to do if they develop on your home. Here is a short article from them that provides a great overview: Ice dam article
At Snowbird Home Watch, every Home Watch visit includes a thorough check of both the exterior and interior of your home. During the winter, we watch for developing ice dams, excessive icicles, and other weather related concerns. Inside, we look for any signs of water intrusion so problems can be identified as early as possible.
If you'll be away this winter, regular Home Watch visits provide peace of mind that someone is keeping an eye on your home, even when you can't.
